Mark’s Monday Message

Mark’s Monday Message

Is ‘it’ coming home? Well I guess most of us (unless we have personal connections to Denmark, Italy or Spain – or Scotland!) wish that to be the case next Sunday. But what is this national obsession we have for the beautiful game, particularly when we have fallen short so many times over the years? Why do we find ourselves singing the national hymn of Baddiel and Skinner every two years with such passion and why do we keep coming back to the altar of the penalty spot with such faith? Well I think faith might be something to do with it. There is certainly a deep inner longing in all of us to be part of something bigger – a corporate identity and community of believers and that’s why church is such a great expression of the kingdom of God. Having a common set of beliefs and something to hope for and give thanks together for and sing (soon!) for is part of our God-given identity. And the good news is that we are already winners! ‘It’ has come home, or rather ‘He’ has. Jesus has made his home in our hearts by the holy spirit and that makes us more than conquerors. We can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens us. We can go into every day with the certainty and hope that we have the victory because He has overcome. Even if the immediate ‘game’ we are playing seems like a loss – the tournament is secured. Let’s carry this confidence and joy with us and sing a new song of faith and hope in our great God. (And come on England!)
